Princess Diana would have been very proud of her son Prince Harry when Duchess Meghan gave birth to Archie Harrison in May. And while Diana is not able to meet her youngest grandchild, it seems Harry and Meghan are doing their best to pass her legacy on to their son.
A report in Us Weekly claims the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have placed a framed photo of the late Princess of Wales in Archie’s nursery in their home of Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.
Aug. 31 marks the 22nd anniversary of Diana’s death. Harry has been very outspoken about how his mother’s passing affected him, saying he bottled his emotions up for years. Royal watchers will remember how he and Prince William walked behind his mother’s coffin during her funeral procession, something he said in 2017 no child should ever have to do.
“It was during their first trip to Africa together, shortly after they started dating, that Harry first opened up to Meghan about his mom and the pain he suffered following her death,” an insider reportedly told Us Weekly.
Harry and Meghan were said to have travelled to Botswana together during their early days of dating and bonded there. Sub-Saharan Africa was a good place for Harry to speak to Meghan about his mother. Harry has the same affinity for that part of the continent that his mother had. Diana travelled there in 1997 to draw attention to the problem of landmines and the havoc weapons left over from Angola’s decades-long civil were causing there. She was famously photographed walking through a minefield to raise awareness about the issue.
In 2013, Harry travelled to Angola and visited minefields that had been cleared by The HALO Trust, the same charity his mother had worked with 13 years before. He had previously visited similar sites in Mozambique.
“He still gets very emotional talking about [Diana’s death],” the insider told Us Weekly. “One of the things that first attracted Harry to Meghan was the way her kindness, determination and strength reminded him so much of his mom.”
Diana will no doubt influence Harry and Meghan’s parenting style, even if Meghan never met her. Diana was such a loving, doting mother, and royal watchers have often remarked how William and Duchess Kate are gentle and caring with their children in the same way. It’s clear Harry and Meghan will adopt a similar parenting style and it’s wonderful they’ve brought Diana’s spirit and memory into Archie’s nursery from such a young age.
