Designer Mikael Derderian may be familiar to those who frequented the WMFW catwalks last season; as the famed designer for Pavoni, Mikael was the talk of the fall shows for his breathtaking, red carpet-ready gowns.
Branching out all on his own, MIKAEL D promises more of what we love from Mikael’s unapologetically extravagant style: Feminine, magical dresses that women wear for those truly special occasions. (Just to give you an idea, Giuliana Rancic wore a Mikael gown for the 2013 Emmy Awards.)
We asked Mikael the WHO, WHAT, WHERE and WHY of his Spring 2014 collection. See his answers below!
WHAT was your inspiration
for the spring/summer 2014 collection?
Geometric glamour. The Spring 2014 collection is inspired by Art Nouveau arabesques
and Art Deco-inspired streamlined looks, paying stellar tribute to the evening dress.
WHY do you love showing in
Toronto and the energy at Mastercard Fashion Week?
I love showing in Toronto because I am Canadian, and I truly
enjoy doing my runway on home ground... the reception from the city has always
been phenomenal and the energy is always positive… there is a certain “ joie de
vivre” here, and of course a keen interest in fashion, which makes the
experience that much better.
WHO is the 'MIKAEL D' woman, and what are they doing on a Saturday afternoon in Toronto?
I believe that the MIKAEL D woman basks in a style all her own,
that which is a juxtaposition between the modern and the classic, she enjoys
remixing fragments of the past into something new and contemporary. I always
design with my ideal woman in mind, my muse. She is confident, elegant,
sexy, sophisticated. She is successful, and very proud of her achievements.
She is unique in her style and is on the cusp of all the major fashion
trends...
On a Saturday afternoon she is most probably hosting a major charity luncheon
or an event for a cause that is very dear to her heart.
WHERE do you see yourself
and the collection in five years?
The company’s future plans are to expand and reach as many women
as possible around the world. The brand is now available in over 45 cities
internationally... and this number is growing quite rapidly. I have always
dreamed of giving all women the chance to experience, my vision, and my personal
fashion aesthetic, and I will work very hard to reach them, wherever they may
be. I also hope that we can develop the international market by offering other
product lines to satisfy women of all ages, tastes and needs.
The sky is the limit for MIKAEL D!
