Take Five with ... Karlie Kloss: The women who inspire me

As a runway fixture and BFF to Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss is used to having all eyes on her. The L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, 23, knows that not only are fans and followers looking up to her, but they’re listening to her, too. “There’s been this shift that’s fuelled by social media that allows models to have a voice,” Karlie tells Hello! While she juggles modelling with charity work and studies at NYU, Karlie says she’s always conscious of setting a good example for other young women.

Besides speaking out about things that she believes in, the Chicago native is also opening up to fans about her favourite products, travel must-haves and lessons she’s learned on her YouTube channel, Klossy. She’s always aimed to leave her mark as a model, and despite having walked the runways for designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and Christian Dior, Karlie says she still has many things on her to-do list. Here, she opens up about the women who motivate her and what it’s like to have more than three million followers at her fingertips.

Christy is my hero, my role model. She’s also a mentor and friend. I’m really lucky to know her on a personal level. Before that, I looked up to her for what she’s been able to accomplish not only in her modelling career but also in her philanthropic career with Every Mother Counts. She’s been able to use her modelling success to shed light on something that’s important and near and dear to her heart. I’m not somebody who gets star-struck, but when I met Christy Turlington, I cried. I was just so happy to meet her.

She is an entrepreneur, and something that I’m also interested in is starting a company with a purpose behind it. I started baking my Kookies, and with every cookie we donate 10 school lunches [to those in need]. Over the past two years, we’ve donated over a million school lunches. I’m really proud. So I think Cindy Crawford is a wonderful entrepreneur to look up to.

She’s amazing. I have such a girl crush on her. She’s such a beautiful, powerful, smart woman. We started following each other on Instagram and I get very excited when she likes my photos.

My mom always reiterated to my sisters and me that it’s less about what you’re wearing, and more about how you wear it. I think that applies to makeup, too. I think it’s about the confidence that comes from within. For me, that comes from doing things that make me feel good in my own skin.

Through social media I have the opportunity to reach lots of people at once. It’s a really wonderful thing, but there’s a bit of responsibility that comes with that. I do my best to be genuine and use it to share what I’m excited about or what I’m inspired by. I’ve always aspired to do something really purposeful and meaningful [in my career], so I think it motivates me to continue to build my reach [so that I’m] able to make as much meaningful impact as possible.
