Diary of the Week: Saks Fifth Avenue, the Notable Awards, Drake at All-Star and more

If there was one fashion happening in Toronto this week threatening to break the internet, it was the grand opening of Canada's first Saks Fifth Avenue - but before the glistening doors were thrust open, an elegant gala introduced the spectacular space to the city's movers and shakers. A chic cocktail benefitting the National Ballet saw dancers and musicians entertaining guests as they sipped cocktails and nibbled on canapés.

A staple on Toronto's social calendar, the Notable Awards, created by notable.ca and hosted by founder Julian Brass, honour the who's who of Canada's young professionals who are shaking things up in their respective fields. Among this year's honourees, who descended on The Carlu for a festive party in their honour, were lifetime award recipient Joe Mimran, singer Jully Black (who performed a surprise song), Hockey Wives star Maripier Morin and presenter Chef Susur Lee. The splashy affair benefitted the Canadian Mental Health Association.

As the NBA's All-Star weekend migrated north this year for its first run in Canada, a series of high-profile events and parties took over the city - but one star-studded private dinner was far more quiet and intimate than the rest. Beats and Drake took to the rapper's own Frings restaurant to kick off the weekend in style, with DJ Steph Floss on the decks, signature cocktails flowing and a three-course meal courtesy of Susur Lee. Special guests like LeBron James, Future the Prince and Kevin Hart mingled as magician David Blaine delighted revellers with tricks mid-conversation.

After a total revamp courtesy of Toronto's II by IV Design firm, the Thompson Hotel reopened with a bang, boasting three quadrants for guests to explore - a seating area, a private event space and the bar itself. After hosting basketball elite during All-Star weekend, the space officially opened to the public with back-to-back cocktail parties where guests enjoyed classic cocktails with a modern twist as well as champagne, plus passed hors d'oeuvres like scallops, arancini bites and pulled duck and beet salad.
