Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are expecting their first child together. With the little one being due in the fall of this year, the baby will be here before we know it, and many are curious to see what name the couple will select for the baby. And we want you to have your say!
The happy news that Edo and Beatrice were expecting a baby was revealed in a statement from Buckingham Palace on May 19.
"Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting a baby in autumn of this year," the statement read.
"The Queen has been informed and both families are delighted with the news."
The baby's gender hasn't been revealed to the public, leaving many possible royal baby name options. Early reports suggested that Edo and Bea would select a moniker from a "small pool" of names.
Like with many recent royal babies, it is highly likely, according to bookies and royals fans, the expectant royal and her husband will select a name with a special significance and likely a connection to the Royal Family or that nods to Edoardo's Italian heritage.
One sentimental choice: Edoardo and the elder Princess of York could name the little one after the royal's late grandfather, Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh was able to attend Edo and Beatrice's July 2020 wedding with the Queen, and Bea was said to be very close to him before he passed away at the age of 99 in April.
Additionally, many royal baby names of late have paid tribute to Philip in some way, including Zara and Mike Tindall's third child, son Lucas Philip Tindall, who was born on March 21, 2021. Eugenie's younger sister Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed a baby boy on Feb. 9 named August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.
If the baby is a girl, the little one could be named after Her Majesty. Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry did so with daughter Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor's name. The Sussexes adorably selected the Queen's childhood nickname to call their daughter so perhaps Harry's cousin Beatrice will be inspired. Lili was born on June 4, 2021 and was the Queen's most recent great-grandchild. Beatrice's baby will be the 12th.
Naming the baby after its grandparents is also a consideration. The couple could pay tribute to mom-to-be Beatrice's parents, Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, or Edo's parents, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi and Nikki Shale. Similarly, Edoardo and Beatrice might honour Edoardo's late stepfather, Christopher Shale, who passed away in June 2011.
Edoardo's five-year-old son, Christopher Woolf (known as Wolfie), from his previous relationship with American architect Dara Huang, shares a name with his late stepdad.
Royal names from the past are always strong contenders, including Victoria, Grace and Alice. Alice has long been a favourite for a royal baby name, but it has yet to be selected. The moniker would pay tribute to Philip's mother, Princess Alice of of Battenberg, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, who is recognized by Israel for sheltering Jewish refugees during World War II in Athens. The name Alice was in the running for Eugenie and Jack's firstborn.
Theodore and Florence were leading the way in the betting when it was announced that Beatrice and Edoardo were expecting, according to Alex Apati of Ladbrokes. Other contenders included Alberto, Alexander and Alfonso for a boy and Gabriella, Allegra and Emmeline for a girl. (Allegra was also part of the bets for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's children.) Many of the names nod to Edo's Italian heritage.
According to Betfair, Philip was the standout favourite for a boy with odds at 8/1, followed by Marco at 11/1 and Oliver at 12/1 when the poll started in May 2021.
Sarah was the top name if it was a girl at 8/1 while Maria had 12/1 odds and Rosa was at 14/1.
The couple could select a traditional moniker, choose something that pays a lovely tribute to a dear family member or go for something completely unique. There are many possibilities and we want to know your top picks.
